I went this weekend and thought I'd post a quick review for Matty and anyone else who might be interested.
First off: the ride there! Probably the most fun part of the day! We took the route suggested here and had an absolute whale of a time. A couple of miles of narrow but otherwise unchallenging singletrack to get you warmed up, then in to easily the sketchiest stuff I've ever ridden. 40 degree slopes tangled with roots, ruts and rocks as big as your head.
Must admit I walked one particularly terrifying stretch, but other than that managed to stay on my bike apart from hauling it over fences. Why the hell the council has placed gates it's impossible to get a bike through on the bridleway I don't know.
Anyway, we got there with massive grins on our faces and they just got bigger when we saw the quarry itself. Two massive levels, each with a variety of jumps, drop-offs and other shit ranging from easy to insane. Being pretty new to riding I mostly stuck to a couple of the smaller jumps, but there are plenty of 10 foot + drop offs and massive jumps to be had for the braver amongst you.
We also worked out a sweeet circuit of the entire quarry incorporating the two steepest descents we could ride followed by a quick run over the floor of the lower area that's littered with little bumps and jumps. If racing is your thing you'll love that.
All in all a pretty great day, and definitely worth the trip down from the toon. If you fancy a day out and don't mind a bit of a drive I'd highly recommend it.
